A Trip Down the Beach Back to the Past

Yesterday, Day 6 in Cancun was an interesting day.

We decided to walk down the playa (beach) to the first resort we stayed in here in Cancun 15 years ago.  Kids, do you remember?

This used to be called the Pyramides.  It's now the Park Royal.  We had a good time here.
There is a ruin right on the property, but you don't get much info about it besides this sign.  See below after my pictures for some more info about what these two temples were used for.
This ruin is really small, but must have withstood many hurricanes.
After the long walk, we went inside the Pyramides and had lunch since we are Royal Holiday members and can go to any of the resorts and use the facilities.  The food was better than our hotel.  We also got a look at one of the suites and decided we wouldn't mind staying here if we come back again.  It costs less points, but is just as nice if not quite as great of a view.

However, it is such a pain to do anything in Mexico.  All the people try to make an extra 100 pesos - you find tons of add-ons whenever you get something for "free."  I will say that the waiters at our restaurants have been top notch.  And since you don't tip, you know it's simply them doing their job to the best of their abilities, not just to get a big tip.  Honestly, I've never had better service.

Following lunch we walked back along the road since walking on the beach was exhausting!  We enjoyed the rest of the afternoon and evening sitting around on the beach and taking a dip in the pool after the walk.  I've enjoyed some books on my Kindle.  Love that piece of technology!  Hubby has been sleeping in, laying around, and generally getting a good rest and a sunburn!

Here's some info on the ruins -

"Yamil Lu'um, "hilly land" is located in Cancún on the highest point of land. This archaeological site is lodged between the Westin Laguna Mar and the Park Royal Pirámides, Yamil Lu’umon. The Yamil Lu'um site consists of two small temples that were built between 1200 AD and 1550 AD. The Templo del Alacrán (Temple of the Scorpion), owing its name to the remains of a scorpion sculpture on one of its walls, and the Templo de la Huella (Temple of the Handprint), named so because of a hand print in the stucco. Unfortunately, neither the scorpion sculpture nor the hand print is visible these days. The ruins are well above the beach on Cancún’s highest point, suggesting that the two small temples were used as watchtowers, lighthouses, and navigational aids. Yamil Lu'um is the smallest of the Cancún ruins. It was first visited by John Lloyd Stephens in 1842."
