We'll be BACK

Our lovely vacation to Hawaii has ended and we are back home in the cold.  The last day was one of the best because the Pipe Pro surf competition had part of their event on Saturday.  Amazing the waves on Saturday!  There is NO way I would ever venture out into the power of the ocean when the waves are this big.
We went back to Sunset Beach where we had been a couple days before.  This time the beach was packed with spectators.

There was an announcer and a scoreboard.
I couldn't believe how much difference a day makes.  The waves were huge all up and down the north shore of Oahu.
Here's a body boarder riding one of the waves.
There were lifeguards on Sea-Doos patrolling the coast.
There was one surfer whose board apparently got broken when he wiped out.  I am surprised HE didn't get broken when he wiped out.  We didn't know anything was wrong until the lifeguard sped over behind the first row of breakers and dragged him on a little raft all the way to the beach.

There was such a huge undertow that the rescued surfer tried 3 or 4 times to get up on the beach and kept getting dragged back.  He had the tether that hooks him to his surfboard in his hand, but no board.
This guy had a good ride.  You can see the "pipe" or curl of this wave. I think this was a 15 - 20 foot wave.
A few minutes later this event was stopped due to dangerous conditions.  I guess so!
This is the same little lagoon we had stopped at the other day.  (See the blog from Wednesday.)  There were yellow "caution" tapes all around the beach warning people to stay out of the water.
Hubby had been standing just where that white water is crashing over the rocks.  Ouch.
I respect the ocean!  Wow.  You just had to be there!
We continued further north and came the port town of Haleiwa where Hubby had left for his fishing trip, where you can see turtles on the beaches and where surfers tempt fate just for the fun of it.  No big competition here, but plenty of big waves and good surfers to watch.
Note how the mist is blowing back out to the ocean.  The wind whips that up and makes for some cool pictures.  This guy had been inside that curl that's trying to catch him from behind.

Now it's back to reality and cold weather.  I sure appreciate both places and the ability to take such a relaxing vacation.
